Overview

JRA is collaborating with Studio RHE to design a campus of two best in class workplaces on a prominent site at the junction of Bermondsey Street, St Thomas Street and Snowsfield in Southwark, on behalf of Aviva Investors.

The Leather Warehouse, an existing building dating from 1850, will be given a new life, celebrating and retaining as much original fabric and structure as possible, with a sensitive side extension to house the building core. The original warehouse will remain a legible and distinct element in the streetscape.

Bermondsey Yards partially retains one of the existing buildings on the site and reinstates the historic ‘yard’ that once ran through the heart of the site, delivering a generous public realm. A roofscape of the building is set back from the contextual masonry shoulder fronting Bermondsey Street with a visually lightweight massing, recessed to reduce the visual impact of the scheme from the adjacent conservation area.

The project is striving for the highest environmental credentials with BREEAM Outstanding, WELL Platinum and NABERS 5* all being targeted as well as an embodied carbon footprint of ~438kgCO2/m2.
